If not the father of modelling, Francois Verlinden could certainly be considered as one of the early innovators.
His dioramas, conversion and accessory kits revolutionised modelling, plus his range of 1/35th and 1/16th scale figures ( then later on AFV's to match the 1/16th figures ) were reasonably priced and widely available and well produced.
Of note is the fact that the majority of Verlinden castings have no mould part line, simply a casting block needing to be removed prior to being able to make use of it.
Verlinden's range of products at relatively low prices for the time also led to people being able to risk conversion of larger scale figures in the same way that the plastic Historex kits did in the 1970's.
Verlinden kits are still available on the internet, even though the company has ceased trading.
